Teen years can be difficult. Know what to look for, when to act, and where to go for help.

The teen years can be difficult.

Our youth’s mental health is important. They need continued support and encouragement. Most teens move through adolescence with few issues. But what about when they struggle?

What do you look for to know they may need help?

1

Changes in appearance.

2

Increased arguments and rebellious behavior.

3

Mood swings.

Rapid changes in personality, falling grades, and persistent sadness, anxiety, or sleep problems could indicate depression, bullying, or another emotional health issue.
4

Any talk about suicide.

5

Sudden change in peer group

Beware of new friends encouraging negative behavior.
6

Isolating

Your teen doesn't want to hang out with friends or family.
7

Drug and/or alcohol use.

8

Lack of motivation.

9

Withdrawing from activities that they enjoy.

Ways to Help

Once you know the signs, it is important to know how to help. Below this section are some links to other websites that might be helpful.

1

Encourage them to share how they feel.

2

Support and encourage them to take breaks especially from social media.

3

Listen to what they have to say. Work through conflict together.

4

Find common ground.

5

Listen without judging or advice giving.

6

Encourage self-care activities that your teen would like.

7

Help them practice healthy habits for their nutrition, sleep, and exercise.

8

Seek professional help.
